Teriflunomide is in a class of medications called immunomodulatory agents. It is thought to work by decreasing inflammation and decreasing the action of immune cells that may cause nerve damage.
What is the mechanism of action of teriflunomide?
Teriflunomide selectively and reversibly inhibits dihydro-orotate dehydrogenase, a key mitochondrial enzyme in the de novo pyrimidine synthesis pathway, leading to a reduction in proliferation of activated T and B lymphocytes without causing cell death.
